WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE AND DURING YOUR MASSAGE SESSION
First and foremost, a massage session at Wings Massage & Bodywork is always about you. If you have never had a massage before or if this is your first time at Wings, here is what you can expect before and during your massage session.
When you step through the door at Wings, you will will be greeted warmly as you step into our beautifully decorated, softly lit and peaceful sitting area. There will be soft, tranquil music playing in the background and wonderfully scented candles burning. You will be invited to sit down and relax a bit on our comfortable couch while you fill out a Health Intake Form. Completion of the form is required in order for your therapist to determine the best treatment plan for your specific needs. There are certain conditions that, should you have them, will require special attention from your therapist. Also, there are a few conditions that might restrict your ability to receive massage therapy and your therapist will need to know about these in advance.
Once you have completed your form, you will be taken into one of two private massage suites off of the sitting area. You and your therapist will discuss/establish your goals for the session. Once this is done, your therapist will leave the room allowing enough time for you to disrobe to your comfort level and lie down on the warmed massage table under a sheet and blanket. Your therapist will knock on the door to the room and ask if it is ok to re-enter the room.
Your massage session will always be about meeting your needs. You will never have to comply with anything that makes you uncomfortable. Since you are unique, your massage will be unique to you, from the depth of pressure used by the therapist to which body areas will be massaged and how. Your therapist will always check in with you and will modify your session based on your needs. Should you ever feel that the pressure is too light or too deep, you need only voice this and your therapist will immediately correct the pressure according to your preference. Remember that you are the expert on your own body, therefore you will need to let your therapist know what feels right for you. Your therapist can feel patterns of tension and tight muscles and will work to release these areas but you will need to let him/her know if the pressure on these sensitive or sore areas causes you too much discomfort. While massage is - for the most part - rightfully considered to be relaxing, it can sometimes be a bit painful, especially if your body is over tight in some areas. This is particularly relevant if you are having deep tissue massage. The pain results from the work being done on tight muscles and is indicative of how much tension is in your body. Although there is a certain level of pressure required on tight areas (e.g. trigger points) in order for the massage to be effective, the pain or discomfort should never reach a level beyond your comfort threshold. You should never hesitate to speak up if the pain is too much. Likewise, if you prefer that the therapist avoids or focuses on certain body parts (e.g. face, feet, buttocks) you should always give voice to your preferences prior to or early during your massage session.
If you still have questions about what to expect, please call us at (508) 332-6522 or send an email to customerservice@wings-massage.com and we will be happy to answer them.
